Communicating with children is not always easy, and approaching some of the harder topics such as death, divorce and bullying to name just a few can be a daunting task for any parent or teacher. The persona doll approach was created as a tool to engage with children in a manner that is non-threatening and enjoyable. This wonderful approach can be used in so many ways with children who have hearing loss, from discussing topics to develop theory of mind and emotional intelligence, to addressing challenges in their world that may arise on a daily basis. The dolls can be used to initiate conversation with the aim to build on literacy skills and expand vocabulary whilst affording the child an opportunity to identify with another little “person” who is just like them. The persona doll approach is being used in South Africa and can be used with both deaf and hearing children. The dolls can be used on a one-to-one basis with children in the home, in therapy session or in a group such as a classroom at school.
